Most of the machines this site covers didn’t die in a single dramatic moment. There was no equivalent bankruptcy announcement for the entire home micro era — it just got quietly, comprehensively out-competed by a platform that was, on paper, less interesting than almost any of them.

Boring, but everywhere

IBM’s decision in 1981 to build the original PC from off-the-shelf components, rather than custom silicon, meant it was almost immediately cloneable — and clone it the industry did, at a pace and scale no single custom-chip home micro could match. Every clone manufacturer running MS-DOS added to a single, compounding software and business ecosystem.

Why custom chips stopped being an advantage

The Amiga’s custom graphics, the C64’s SID chip, the Spectrum’s clever cost engineering — all of it had been a genuine competitive edge against generic hardware. But as PC-compatible components got cheaper and more standardised through the late 1980s, that edge eroded. Business software, and increasingly games too, targeted the platform with the biggest, most predictable installed base, not the most interesting chipset.

The home micro era didn’t lose a fight. It lost a war of attrition against boring, relentless standardisation.

The slow fade

By the early 1990s, most home micro platforms had either folded, pivoted, or become niche enthusiast concerns. MS-DOS, and Windows after it, didn’t win by being more exciting. It won by being everywhere, endlessly compatible with itself, and — crucially — cheap enough that the custom-chip alternatives simply couldn’t out-price it any more. A very unglamorous ending for a genuinely colourful era.
