Every breadbin C64 that has sat in a loft since the Major government is running on electrolytics well past their design life. Recapping is straightforward. Lifting a pad off a forty-year-old board because you got impatient is also straightforward, and considerably less fun, so this guide is mostly about not doing that.
Before you start: know your board
There is no single C64 capacitor list, because there is no single C64 board. Assy 250407, 250425, 250466 and 250469 all differ in layout and in what’s fitted where. Do not order a generic “C64 recap kit” and assume it matches yours. Open the machine, read the values printed on the cans, and buy 105°C-rated replacements of the same capacitance and the same or higher voltage rating.
- Temperature-controlled iron, set around 330°C
- Leaded solder — yes, even though the board is leaded already; that’s the point
- Desoldering pump or braid, plus flux
- Isopropyl alcohol and a stiff brush
The technique that saves pads
The single most useful trick: add fresh leaded solder to the old joint before you try to remove anything. Forty-year-old solder has a higher effective melting point and wicks badly on its own. Mixing in fresh solder lowers it and gets the whole joint flowing at once, which is what lets the leg come out cleanly instead of dragging copper with it.
- Discharge yourself and the board — touch the case metalwork before you touch anything else.
- Remove the RF shield (two halves, crimped — work the tabs, don’t lever the seam).
- Photograph the board before you touch a single component. You will want this photo in three weeks.
- Note the value, voltage and polarity of every electrolytic. Small ones near the video/audio section, the larger ones near the PSU header.
- Add fresh solder to the first leg of the first capacitor. Let it flow, then pull the leg while the joint is molten.
- Repeat for the second leg. If a pad lifts anyway, stop — don’t fight it, you can bridge to an adjacent via later.
- Clean each pad with braid before fitting the replacement; don’t solder onto old solder.
- Fit the new capacitor, matching polarity exactly against your notes.
- Move to the next capacitor. Do them one at a time, not all-desolder-then-all-refit — it’s slower but you can’t mix up sixteen positions.
- Once all are replaced, brush the board with isopropyl to clear flux residue.
- Visually inspect every new joint under strong light before refitting the shield.
- Refit the RF shield and reconnect — but not to the original PSU brick yet.
- Power up on a known-good, tested PSU only. See the separate PSU rebuild guide if you haven’t sorted that yet.
- Confirm a clean boot to the READY prompt, then run a RAM test utility rather than trusting it on sight.
If a pad does lift
It happens even to careful hands on old FR2 boards — the copper simply doesn’t have the adhesion of modern FR4. Don’t panic and don’t bin the board. Scrape a little solder mask off the trace a few millimetres away, tin it, and run a short jumper wire from there to the component leg. Ugly, permanent, invisible once the shield’s back on.
