Zero Wing never actually came out on Neo Geo. Toaplan built it for arcade boards, the Mega Drive and the PC Engine CD, and that was that for thirty-odd years, right up until homebrew coder h0ffman decided the gap needed closing himself.
h0ffman already had form here, having previously ported Shinobi and Golden Axe onto Neo Geo hardware without anyone’s permission or involvement. His unofficial Zero Wing conversion pushed further still: six parallax background layers, two sprite layers, all eight levels running, with selectable Mega Drive or PC Engine CD-ROM2 visual styles built in as options.
Then photographs from PLAION’s Tokyo Game Show booth started circulating, and eagle-eyed attendees spotted something that shouldn’t have been there: a physical Zero Wing case, sitting on the shelf next to genuine Neo Geo AES+ titles. PLAION has since confirmed what that photo implied. h0ffman’s fan port is going official, as a licensed AES+ cartridge, with a release date still to be announced.
Homebrew scenes hand-wring about this exact outcome constantly — the fear that an unofficial project gets quietly absorbed and the original coder gets nothing for it. This looks like the opposite result: PLAION spotted good, finished work and decided to publish it properly rather than compete with it or ignore it. Whether that’s generous licensing or just smart business is the actual argument worth having, and either way it beats the alternative.
